A Good Wife
Growing up, my role models were beautifully put together women with equal to, or superior intellect to the men they married. Yet, most of these women spent their days at home being "good wives." My mother measured her waist and ankles every day to make sure she was "Twiggy" thin and rose early to put make up on before my father woke! And dinner was always on the table at 5. Thank goodness those days are behind us!
The original artwork is a mixed media piece which explores a "good wife's" role in supporting her husband as he rose up the corporate ladder, which was the entire content of the 2-part 1950's Life Magazine article I used as a background. The flowers covering one eye represent the incomplete picture these women had of their own personal worth. The portrait is also missing the top of her head, so that she does not question her position in her life. Notice, as well, the girdle ad selling a guaranteed 21" waist!
